I would like to thank David Hurley for taking time out to share his vast knowledge and experience of the labyrinth. From sitting at the feet of the Rev Dr. Lauren Artress (see below for more information) in a labyrinth workshop in the famous Chartres Cathedral to our humble SNN group of twelve, David took us through the basics of Labyrinth (which is situated at Luther College), history, types and other interesting facts. We then walked the labyrinth. David conceived the idea of the labyrinth at Luther a number of years ago, whilst he was a teacher there. He also designed the seven-winged labyrinth and managed its building and development in it is wonderful position down near the LCOSA buildings.
It was a beautiful day with the sun shining down on us and we walked it with the words "release, receive and return" symbolising how the walking of the labyrinth is about walking in with what might be "burdens, griefs, heaviness, etc" to the centre of the labyrinth, where those things can be removed symbolically. Then the walk out from the centre is lighter, less burdensome, less heavy. For some of the participants this was a profound experience and these thoughts were shared in the group after the walk.

The next session had participants share a book which had been inspiring to them and they shared this with the group. Following lunch each participant was asked to share the "item" they had brought with them and how it was important to them. These items were then placed somewhere in the labyrinth to represent that person and to be grateful for them and value who they are. The group then walked the labyrinth again. This time they took time to reflect on each of the items placed along the path and who had placed them there. Some people chose to walk this time in bare feet to gain a sense of grounded-ness while walking.
It was a truly wonderful day and event. Thank you again, David.

As the Founder of Veriditas, the Reverend Dr. Lauren Artress defines it, "The Labyrinth is a spiritual tool that has many applications in various settings. It reduces stress, quiets the mind and opens the heart. It is a walking meditation, a path of prayer, and a blue-print where psyche meets Spirit."
